Thelma & Louise

One of the most significant scenes in the movie is when Thelma says, "I feel really awake. I don't recall ever feeling this awake. You know? Everything looks different now. You feel like that? You feel like you got something to live for?" For Thelma and Louise, a road trip is defined as a way to put distance between them and their life back home. Their life back home made them feel sedated, unable to express themselves. I believe they were tired of settling. Traveling together gave them a chance to take back control of their lives and "for once just really let their hair down." And because of this, they felt more awake and alive.

If someone tells you they have been convicted of armed robbery, why would you leave $6700 laying on top of the bed table?

  1. I agree. Preparing for their road trip, Thelma and Louise are talking on the phone and Thelma asks what she should bring. Louise replies, “oh I don’t know, normal stuff, I guess, it’s the mountains I guess it gets cold, oh I don’t know I’m just going to bring everything.” Thelma agrees and in addition packs a lantern and I pistol. Louise picks her up and comments on the two items asking why she’s bringing them. Other than knowing that they’re going to Colorado, Thelma says she doesn’t know what they’re going to encounter and says “I want to take it anyways just in case…in case there’s some escaped psycho killer on the loose who cuts the electricity and tries to come in and kill us”. Neither lady knows what exactly their road trip is going to consist of, and packs “everything” as a result. It seems as if the two women are going on this trip in an attempt to escape their lives with their husbands.

Question: why do you think they plan to go fishing in the mountains to escape their past rather than going to some place like Vegas or another more upbeat town.
